What You Need For Great Calligraphy
By
Edward Ashcroft-Hamilton
Choosing the right calligraphy pen set is the most crucial part of
getting the best results from the art itself. Since this is the most
vital tool it is important to make the right choice. Each individual
that practices calligraphy should pay attention to this aspect when
choosing the right pen set for calligraphy. For example, if you are
planning to learn Western calligraphy, the pen set that is most suited
for this style should be chosen.
Pen sets meant for this type of style are fitted with a holder, nibs and
ink reservoirs. The main point to consider when choosing a set for
Western calligraphy is the penholder. It should feel comfortable for the
user with a proper grip and easy style. The choice of nibs and ink
should be perfectly matched so it will produce the best results at the
end of the learning process.
There is some difference between a normal fountain pen and a calligraphy
pen set. Although they look alike, their functioning and purpose is
different as well as their nibs and the structure of the ink reservoir.
A calligraphy pen will have thin as well as thick nibs to suit the style
of lettering. The ink reservoir would be fitted to a nib that can be
removed and replaced according to the user's choice.
A variety of pen holders are available in the market today for
calligraphers to choose from. You can find a calligraphy pen set made of
wood, glass, ivory, plastic or even bone. Each has its own unique work
of art to attract its users. They also come in a variety of sizes,
shapes and colors that also are designed to appeal in different ways to
calligraphy artists. The most important point in choosing a pen set is
to get the right level of comfort that is required for the hand while
using the pen.
There are still a few calligraphy pens available that have either rubber
or cork grips that give the fingers a comfortable feel, preventing them
from slipping away while forming the letters. You can find heavy pen
sets as well as light pen sets. These are designed to accommodate the
tastes of different calligraphers. There are some who prefer to have a
calligraphy set that is light weight so it will move freely on the paper
while there are other writers who like to have heavier pens so they will
not have to put too much pressure on the paper. Yet another group of
calligraphers prefer to have something that is outstanding and unique to
keep as a souvenir.
The basic calligraphy pen kit will not have any nib to fit it. It
requires a special nib manufactured by the particular factory that
manufactured the pen itself. This is done with the purpose of gaining
more profits for the manufacturers. However, if you are a collector of
pen holders this problem may not seem too serious as you can collect
enough pen holders to add to your collection.
Ultimately it is important to note that many pen holders that are
expensive are not always comfortable and vice versa. Hence a
calligrapher whether a beginner or a professional, should choose the
right calligraphy pen set that best suits their style of writing and
feels comfortable to use.
